Construction Update

Stay alert while driving through workzones and follows detour signs. Watch for construction personnel, equipment and vehicles leaving a construction site and merging with traffic. Motorists should use alternate routes when possible. No pedestrians are allowed in construction work areas for safety reasons. Slow for the cone zone!

SR 178/Fairfax Road Interchange

August 30- September 6, 2010

All segments of the interchange are now open. Security Paving Company crews will be on site completing final detail and llandscaping work.

On Monday, August 30, 2010, crews will be working on a freeway light post, adjacent to the westbound on-ramp and just west of the Fairfax Bridge. Motorists should stay alert while driving through the area and watch for construction crews and equipment.

Westside Parkway Phase 1 – Mohawk Street Extension

August 30- September 6, 2010

Work continues on theTruxtun Avenue/Mohawk Street intersection and the Kern River bridge.

Short-term lane closures, that reduce traffic to one lane near the Truxtun Avenue/Mohawk Street intersection, may be in place between 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The closures will not affect all directions simultaneously; however, while a closure is in effect, only one lane will be open to traffic in that direction so motorists should expect delays. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use an alternate route during this period. If traveling through the area is unavoidable, please allow for additional travel time.

There is a temporary closure of the equestrian trail, located on the north side of the Kern River, through the construction zone. The Hoey Jogging Trail is also closed, within the construction area, while work is underway. Jogging trail users may bypass the construction zone by using the bike path. These closures will remain in place while work could compromise trail users' safety.

Westside Parkway Phase 2

August 30- September 6, 2010

SPC plans to close the northbound and southbound inside lanes on a section of Coffee Road between Truxtun Avenue and Brimhall Road on Wednesday, September 1, 2010. Lane closures are expected to be in place at 6 a.m. for the northbound lane and at 9 a.m. for the southbound lane. The lane closures are needed to construct the center support columns for the Westside Parkway Bridge that will cross over Coffee Road. After these columns are constructed, this area is needed to support the overhead forming for the bridge superstructure. Motorists should expect these lanes to be closed for at least six months. Two lanes in each direction are expected to remain open to traffic while this construction is underway.

A section of Jewetta Avenue, located between Stockdale Highway and Brimhall Road, is closed to automobile traffic. Closure limits are from Pecos River Drive to Braemar Lane. Pedestrian and bike access will be maintained across this area. Access roads from Jewetta Avenue into residential developments will remain open.  Motorists traveling north-south between Stockdale Highway and Brimhall Road may use nearby parallel routes: Allen Road, Calloway Drive and Coffee Road.

SPC is working on the bridge structures at Calloway Drive, Coffee Road, and at the Friant Kern Canal. Soundwall construction continues between Coffee Raod and Allen Road. Work at these locations are off the roadway and are not expected to impact traffic.

7th Standard Road Widening Project

August 2010

Granite Construction will start working on the falsework for the 7th Standard Road/Santa Fe Way grade separation in early August. Later this month the contractor plans to place concrete for the five columns and two abutments.

Traffic has been shifted onto the newly built 7th Standard Road between Zachary Road and Calloway Drive. Asphalt removal will begin on parts of the existing road, mainly near the canals, and the contractor will begin importing dirt for those areas. No road closures are anticipated for this work, but there may be short, intermittent lane closures for striping, K-rail relocation, etc.

Work on the grade separation at Santa Fe Way is underway. The 7th Standard Road detour from Galpin to Santa Fe is expected to open in early July. Granite Construction is building the large retaining wall along 7th Standard Road, east of the railroad tracks. Five of the column footings have been poured and the pile drivers are completing the piles for three remaining columns. Shell Oil expects to complete its oil line relocation this month, which will allow the contractor to drive the remaining piles for the abutments and start the abutment footings.

Motorists are advised to remain alert to changing conditions while driving through the area.
