State Route 58 Gap Closure
The State Route 58 Gap Closure project will add a third lane in each direction to a three-mile stretch of the freeway between State Route 99 and Cottonwood Road. The additional lanes will be constructed within the median. The project will also widen the "P" Street Bridge, Madison Street Bridge, Cottonwoood Road Bridge and the Bakersfield Corral Railroad Overhead to accommodate the additional lanes.
This project will improve safety, relieve congestion, reduce travel times and provide motorists with a continuous seven-mile, three-lane freeway from State Route 99 to State Route 184 (Weedpatch Highway).
The new lanes have been completed, but prior to open the new lanes, detour signs and temporary
striping need to be installed for the upcoming Beltway Operational Improvements
Project. Signs are currently being made and are expected to be posted and the
temporary striping installed within the month. Once in place, approximately 90
percent of the newly-constructed lanes will open to traffic. A short section of
the new eastbound lane (in the vicinity of the H Street/Chester Avenue ramps)
will remain closed for a longer period to allow for Beltway construction
activities to be performed in this area.
