Mohawk Street Extension Project

Mohawk_Street_Extension_Rendering

Project Description:

This project will build a 1.2 mile north-south connection from Rosedale Highway to Truxtun Avenue, with three lanes in each direction. Construction includes a new railroad grade separation at the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway, a bridge over the Kern River, and the future Westside Parkway interchange.

Project Status:

The project is under construction; completion is anticipated in early 2012. Check current construction activity.

Work has been underway for about a year, but has been mostly out of public view due to the inaccessible location.

Construction of the BNSF railroad bridge is essentially complete. The contractor moved traffic onto the west half of the bridge and the new Refinery Way alignment in early May. The contractor is currently importing the remaining fill dirt required to complete the earthwork. Trucks are entering and leaving the site from Mohawk Street at Rosedale Highway.

The Mohawk Street Bridge over the future Westside Parkway is well underway. The support structures are complete and this bridge deck was poured on May 13, 2010. Two on-off ramps for the Westside Parkway will be built during this phase of construction (to/from the west), with the remaining ramps to be completed during construction of the Truxtun tie-in.

Approximately 320 piles have been set for the bridge crossing the Kern River. The contractor has implemented a diversion plan for the Kern River and has begun erecting the falsework for the bridge deck.
